Lynx back in Commissioner’s Cup final; Collier exits with injury

0

The Minnesota Lynx will get the chance to defend their Commissioner’s Cup championship after they advanced to the final with Tuesday night’s 76-62 victory over the visiting Las Vegas Aces.

But there is concern about Lynx star Napheesa Collier, who left the game early with a back injury.

The Lynx will represent the West for the second year in a row in the WNBA’s in-season competition between the two conferences after finishing 5-1 in Cup play. They will host the July 1 final against the Indiana Fever, who advanced earlier Tuesday after a contentious 88-71 victory over the Connecticut Sun. The Fever were 4-1 in Cup play, as were the New York Liberty, but the Fever won the tiebreaker with their head-to-head win over the Liberty on Saturday.

Collier, who leads the WNBA in scoring and is the early MVP favorite, exited at the 7:57 mark of the third quarter and didn’t return. Coach Cheryl Reeve said there was no update after the game.

The Lynx trailed 39-32 when Collier left, but they rallied without her, led by Courtney Williams‘ 20 points. Minnesota also got 12 points off the bench each from Natisha Hiedeman and Diamond Miller.

Williams said the Lynx knew they had to step up their performance without Collier.

“Once Phee went out, I was like, ‘Everything that feels good has got to go up,'” Williams said of looking for her shot. “That ain’t hard for me. We’ve got to win. So whatever that looks like, that’s what I am going to do. I don’t think I take bad shots, so if I’m open, I’m going to shoot it.”

The Lynx won the Commissioner’s Cup trophy last year over the Liberty, who hosted that game at UBS Arena because their normal home, Barclays Center, was hosting the NBA draft.

Minnesota will be the host this year because the Lynx have a higher season winning percentage at 11-1 compared to the 6-5 Fever, who have won twice with Caitlin Clark back after she missed five games with a quad injury.

“I think the players are excited about that,” Reeve said of the Lynx getting to play the Cup final at Target Center in Minneapolis. “For our fans, I think it’s exciting. We know our opponent in Indiana is someone we haven’t seen yet. It’s great, but we have to put that in the drawer for now. We have other games we’ve got to work through.”

The Lynx will have four regular-season games before the Cup final; the Fever have five. Minnesota and Indiana won’t meet in the regular season until August, when they face off twice, and then play once in September.

The Commissioner’s Cup began in 2021 and has been won by Seattle, Las Vegas, New York and Minnesota. This year, the Cup schedule ran from June 1-17 with each team playing the others in its conference. With expansion team Golden State‘s addition this season, the West had six Cup games and the East had five.

Supporters of Irish language hip-hop group Kneecap have gathered outside a court in London where one of the rappers is appearing on a terror charge.

Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, charged under the name Liam O’Hanna, is accused of displaying a flag in support of proscribed organisation Hezbollah at a London gig.

The 27-year-old, who performs under the name Mo Chara, arrived at Westminster Magistrates’ Court accompanied by band members Móglaí Bap (Naoise Ó Cairealláin) and DJ Próvaí (JJ Ó Dochartaigh).

In a statement, posted on social media in May, Kneecap said: “We deny this ‘offence’ and will vehemently defend ourselves.”

The band arrived at court on Wednesday wearing “Free Mo Chara” T-shirts.

Fans outside the court have placards saying “Free Mo Chara” and “Defend Kneecap”.

Large green flags saying “Free Speech, Free Palestine” are also on display.

A mixture of Palestinian and Kneecap flags were being held by some of the crowd, and cheers were heard after a van drove past displaying the slogan “More Blacks, More Dogs, More Irish, Mo Chara”.

Kneecap said it had “plastered” London with messages of support for its band member.

Trump Mobile faces steep odds, skepticism with plans for US-made smartphones

0

The Trump family’s new mobile phone venture promises to build its golden smartphones in the U.S., an endeavor that experts warn will be nearly impossible in the current manufacturing environment.

Trump Mobile’s T1 Phone will instead likely be forced to grapple with international supply chains that rely heavily on China and have been complicated by President Trump’s own tariff regime.

“It is exceptionally difficult to see how a smartphone like the T1 device would be truly made in the U.S.,” said Leo Gebbie, an industry analyst with CSS Insight.

“[For] anyone who digs beneath the surface, it will be incredibly clear that this simply is not a realistic claim and ultimately devices cannot be made in the U.S. because of the strength of the Asia supply chain, which is so far advanced and significantly further ahead of anything that exists in the U.S. at this moment in time,” he added.

‘We have to bring manufacturing back here’

The Trump Organization, currently helmed by the president’s sons, announced it would be launching a mobile phone business Monday — the anniversary of Trump’s descent down the golden escalator at Trump Tower, which marked his entrance into politics.

Trump Mobile plans to offer a $47 phone plan, an homage to Trump’s tenure as the 47th president, as well as the golden smartphones. The T1 Phone is meant to go on sale in August for $499.

“You can build these phones in the United States,” Donald Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, told podcaster Benny Johnson. “We can do it cheaper. We can do it better. And eventually, all the phones can be built in the United States of America. We have to bring manufacturing back here.”

Trump Jr.’s focus on reshoring manufacturing largely lines up with the efforts by his father’s administration, which has repeatedly cited an expansion of U.S. manufacturing capabilities as the driving factor behind its wide-ranging tariff regime.

However, experts have cautioned that bringing smartphone manufacturing back to the U.S. is largely unrealistic, requiring billions of dollars of investment over decades.

“I think it’s a nonstarter that you could produce phones in the U.S.,” Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said. “Could they produce a few hundred, a few thousand? Possibly. But we don’t see this getting off the ground. And I think they’re going to encounter the same problems that Apple and other smartphone makers have had and why they don’t produce in the U.S.”

“You can never really scale in the U.S. You don’t have the infrastructure, the manufacturing or the skilled labor,” Ives added, noting that he views Trump Mobile more as “experimental and PR rather than a real business.”

Major obstacles

With major obstacles standing in the way of U.S. manufacturing, the company is likely to turn to other options that would still allow it to claim its products are built in the U.S., such as importing a mostly finalized product and adding finishing touches on American soil.

There is a difference between a product technically built in the U.S. and a product that can be labeled “Made in America,” noted Tinglong Dai, a professor at Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

“For something to be ‘Made in the USA,’ you have to have certified FTC standards. Most or all the parts have to be made here, not just final assembly. Because they’re not using that exact, technical term, they have a lot of wiggle room,” Dai told The Hill, referring to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

While an initial press release suggested the phone would be “designed and built in the United States,” the official Trump Mobile website touts the phone as “MADE IN THE USA.”

“They could finish assembly in China … and then send it here. Essentially then they just append it to gold or doing something, then they call it built in the USA,” Dai said. “I don’t think the current FTC would have an issue with that.”

Trump Mobile faces Trump tariffs

As a result of the U.S.’s limited supply chain and manufacturing capability, Trump Mobile may find itself grappling with its namesake’s own tariffs if it attempts to import completed phones or parts.

“There’s a very reasonable chance here that Trump’s own tariffs could come back to bite the T1,” Gebbie said.

“The componentry of a T1 device almost certainly has to come from China or from Vietnam or from India or countries in Asia Pacific, where the very high-tech supply chains required already exist,” he added.

Major tech firms such as Apple are highly dependent on supply chains that run through Asia, with China being particularly crucial to the flow of electronics. These firms have been hit hard by Trump’s tariffs against China, which at one point faced import taxes of 145 percent.

The president’s initial “reciprocal” tariffs also took aim at countries such as India and Vietnam, where tech firms have increasingly moved their manufacturing in an effort to diversity their supply chains.

Many of Trump’s tariffs have since been put on hold or drawn back, and electronics have received an exemption from the import taxes, allowing tech firms to breathe a sigh of relief. However, the president has warned he still plans to impose separate sector-specific tariffs on electronics.

Smartphone makers, including Apple and Samsung, have faced heat from Trump in recent weeks over their manufacturing practices. Apple CEO Tim Cook, who previously maintained an amicable relationship with the president, has become a particular target.

“I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social last month.

He threatened Apple with a 25 percent tariff, which he later said would also apply to Samsung because it produces a similar product.

Beyond the complicated tariff environment, Trump Mobile faces a very short window of time before it plans to bring its T1 Phone to market, with August just six weeks away. Notably, the Trump Mobile website now states it will be available in September.

“If you are going to release something in August, this is already kind of a dream,” Dai said, noting that Trump Jr. did not offer demonstrations with the smartphone he showed off Monday.

“You should at least have a working prototype for media … to be able to try, to be able to review. But we don’t see that,” he added.

Several outlets have also described difficulties with the new Trump Mobile website, as they have sought to test out purchasing the company’s new phone plan or preordering its gold smartphone.

“It’s not entirely impossible,” Dai said of the August timeline. “But even from that, again, I think the timeline is kind of rushed. At least their website needs to work. I don’t think this particular organization has a very clean record of delivering stuff on time and meeting the standards and keeping promises.”

Trump family business raises ethics questions

Trump Jr. noted Monday that his father is not involved with the new Trump Organization venture, underscoring that he and his brother Eric Trump are running the company. The ever-expanding business portfolio of the Trump family during President Trump’s second term has repeatedly raised concerns about how he could benefit from his time in office.

Trump and his sons launched a cryptocurrency company, World Liberty Financial, last fall, which has since unveiled a stablecoin. The digital token was used last month to complete a high-profile $2 billion transaction between an Emirati firm and the crypto exchange Binance.

Trump has earned about $57 million from World Liberty Financial, according to a financial disclosure released Friday.

Trump has also faced scrutiny over the meme coin he launched shortly before his inauguration. He held a dinner with the top investors in the $TRUMP token in May, who spent millions of dollars to secure spots at the exclusive event.

Trump Media & Technology Group, the parent company of Trump’s Truth Social platform, has also gotten in on the crypto craze, raising $2.5 billion to create a bitcoin reserve and taking steps toward launching a series of crypto-related assets.

After Shopify bought his last startup, Birk Jernström wants to help developers build one-person unicorns

0

Sam Altman and “his tech CEO friends” have a betting pool on the year we will see the first one-person billion-dollar company.

The idea of a single person reaching a billion-dollar valuation for a startup would have been unthinkable without AI. But single-person, AI-first businesses have been sprouting all over the tech industry and Birk Jernström, CEO of Polar, a “monetization platform to empower one-person unicorns,” is standing by to help them get there.

Polar hopes to stand out from other payment infrastructure platforms by focusing on the needs of developers. With Polar as their ‘Merchant of Record’ responsible for handling billing and taxes, businesses can sell online products and SaaS subscriptions globally from day one.

Polar can be implemented with a few lines of code, an approach that resonated with VC firm Accel, which led Polar’s $10 million seed round. “There is a new generation of AI-native, early-stage businesses that want to grow without distractions,” partner Andrei Brasoveanu said.

It also helped that Jernström had an exit under his belt. His previous startup, Tictail, was acquired by Shopify in 2018 for $17 million in an all-cash merger. He and his cofounders created it with the ambition to make selling goods online as easy as creating a blog.

“In 2011, we started Tictail with the mission of empowering anyone to start an online store. We launched in 2012 and it quickly took off. In a couple of years, we were home to 100,000+ merchants on the platform, very much on the long tail,” Jernström said.

Recognizing that small merchants needed more traffic, Tictail developed a marketplace that eventually made it a target for Shopify. Tictail’s competitor had grown much bigger and onboarded larger merchants. But after its IPO, the Canadian company saw the need to look at the consumer side of things, and believed Tictail’s team could help.

Together with his cofounders and several of their employees, Jernström joined Shopify’s newly created Shop team. “That eventually became what’s now known as the Shop app and the Shop Pay ecosystem that I was honored to be a part of building from zero to one, and of scaling.”

But in 2021, as he was about to become a father for the first time, Jernström went through a period of self-reflection. This ultimately led him to resign from his remote role to figure out his next move, which turned out to be Polar.

The split was entirely amicable, so much so that Shopify CEO Tobias Lütke and president Harley Finkelstein are now both backing Polar as angels. The “merchant-obsessed” culture they built at Shopify rubbed off on Jernström as well.

“I answer more than 50 or 60 support tickets a day. I know every single customer that we work with, and it’s a bit crazy, but I just love understanding what their next steps are in their journey, and what Polar can do to make that easier for them,” he said.

Understanding its customer base and being open source helped Polar gain traction with its target users. Since launching in September 2024, the startup has grown to 18,000 customers, most of them being developers monetizing software.

This is also reflected on its cap table, which features entrepreneurs behind popular developer tools: Framer and Raycast, both of which Polar integrates with; Dub, Nuxt, Resend, Supabase, Vercel, and WorkOS; and Lovable, which shares Polar’s Swedish roots and a focus on making it easier to build.

Now, they are backing Jernström’s ambition to make building a business around software as easy as platforms like Supabase and Vercel make it to build and scale the software itself.

This ties into the momentum that AI has created for indie hackers and professional developers. But it also connects the dots with him growing up with an entrepreneur mom as a kid; being a developer since his teens; and of course, Tictail’s journey of lifting up the little guys.

“What I want Polar to achieve is similar to Shopify: How do we empower more entrepreneurship of developers that can actually build and follow their own passions and ship software independently and build businesses around that.”

Premier League fixtures Arsenal open at Man United both face tough starts

0

Arsenal begin their Premier League campaign with a trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United and then face away games against Liverpool and Newcastle United and a home clash with Manchester City in their opening six games of the 2025-26 season.

United and Manchester City, two sides that struggled last season, also have difficult starts to the season.

After an opening-day test against Arsenal, Ruben Amorim will be looking to get points on the board against Fulham and Burnley before facing City and Chelsea in a difficult opening run. United travel to Anfield on Oct. 18 with the return fixture against Liverpool at Old Trafford on May 2.

Pep Guardiola’s revamped side, who are competing in the Club World Cup this summer, begin at Wolverhampton Wanderers and then face Tottenham Hotspur, United and Arsenal in their first five games.

Premier League champions Liverpool will begin their title defence against AFC Bournemouth at Anfield and play the season’s curtain raiser with the game kicking off on Friday, Aug. 18, at 8 p.m. BST (3 p.m. ET).

Liverpool then travel to Newcastle and host Arsenal in their opening three games before hosting Everton, United and travelling to Chelsea by mid-October.

Following the opening round of the Champions League, Liverpool host Everton in the first Merseyside derby of the campaign and City travel to Arsenal. After subsequent Champions League rounds Arne Slot’s side travel to Chelsea, Brentford and City. Arsenal have home games after the first three rounds of the flagship European competition.

Thomas Frank will begin his reign as Tottenham manager with a home game against newly promoted Burnley before travelling to City in the second game. He faces former side Brentford twice in December, but it is a run of games in November that looks particularly tricky. After completing October against Aston Villa and Everton, Spurs then face Chelsea, United, Arsenal in a row.

Chelsea start with four fixtures against London clubs in a row — Crystal Palace, West Ham United, Fulham and Brentford — but things get harder at the end of the season with Arsenal, Villa, Newcastle, City, United, Liverpool and Spurs all to come from the end of February.

City face a tough spell in early 2026 with five of eight games against top opposition. Their run from Jan. 3 is against Chelsea, Brighton, United, Wolves, Tottenham, Liverpool, Fulham and Newcastle.

The season is set to finish on May 24. Players will have less than three weeks to prepare for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, which is scheduled to begin on June 11.

Anne Burrell’s Food Network Family Speaks After Death

0

The cooking community is in mourning.

Chocolate price rises hit record as food costs grow

Chocolate prices in the UK rose at the fastest pace on record in May as the overall cost of food continued to climb, official figures suggest.

The main rate of inflation remained at 3.4% in the year to May.

However, food prices grew for the third month in a row, as some economists speculated that businesses were passing on recent increases in employer National Insurance payments to customers.

The rise, along with a higher minimum wage, came into effect in April, after Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced the increases in last October’s Budget aimed at raising £25bn.

Food prices have risen for three months in a row and, at 4.4% in May, are the highest since February last year.

Ruth Gregory, deputy chief economist at Capital Economics, suggested that the increase “perhaps provides a tentative sign that firms are passing on more of April’s rise in National Insurance Contributions in their selling prices”.

Chocolate in particular has been affected by bad harvests in cocoa-producing regions, as bad weather hit Ghana and Ivory Coast.

Chocolate stocks fell to all-time lows earlier in the year, making the price surge.

In the year to May, chocolate prices rose by 17.7%, according to the ONS. This is the fastest pace since 2016 when the ONS’s records began.

Rising food inflation was partially offset by cheaper travel prices in May.

The Office for National Statistics said that the cost of plane tickets fell compared with a large rise last year “as the timing of Easter and school holidays affected pricing”.

The overall pace of price rises in May was the same as in April, following a revision by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), and means that inflation remains at its highest for more than a year.

Inflation is above the Bank of England’s target rate of 2% but it is not expected to cut interest rates when it meets on Thursday.

Commenting on the inflation rate, Chancellor Rachel Reeves said: “This government is investing in Britain’s renewal to make working people better off.”

But shadow chancellor Mel Stride called the latest inflation figures “deeply worrying for families”.

“Labour’s choices to tax jobs and ramp up borrowing are killing growth and stoking inflation – making everyday essentials more expensive,” he said.

Kris Hamer, director of insight at the British Retail Consortium, which represents the sector, said: “Since October, retailers have warned that the costs from the chancellor’s Budget could not be fully absorbed and would inevitably lead to higher prices for shoppers.”

‘Young families now price-check’

Coffee stand owner Zayna Omer says young families are spending less on food

Zanya Omer, owner of coffee stand Harbour Grind in Whitstable told the BBC that business is “good” but she has noticed consumers’ budget are squeezed.

Customers are not buying as much food from her, opting instead to bring packed lunches when they take a day trip to the Kent seaside town.

“Most people here are retirees, so they have income,” Ms Omer said.

“But the young families, you do notice with them they will price check first or compare prices along the strip, and then come back.”

Ms Omer said hidden costs – such as card machine fees which cost her about 10p extra per coffee sold – have led to her offering cash customers a small discount.

For now, she will keep her prices as they are. “I’d go out of business if I increase my prices,” she said.

Inflation could remain high from potential higher energy costs, as the oil-rich middle East is affected by a recent escalation in violence between Israel and Iran.

“Any major disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could echo the supply chain shock of 2021, with surging oil and shipping costs. Many smaller businesses will have little capacity to absorb these pressures,” said head of research at the British Chambers of Commerce, David Bharier. He added price pressures could be reduced by easing the tax burden on businesses, and reducing trade friction between both the EU and USA”.
