The Russian authorities have recently applied an unprecedented sanction to Google in the form of a fine for 20 decillion rubles – a number that is impossible to comprehend, let alone comment on because even the overall economy of the world cannot compare to it several times over.
This massive fine is compounded by YouTube’s owner Google, the Alphabet, to ban Russian state-run media channels after the Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A Russian court stated that Google violated the provision of the national broadcasting by restricting state-funded involves of YouTube. The Kremlin admitted that this staggering penalty amounts to a symbolic show meant to prompt Google into changing how it treats Russian broadcasters. According to Dmitry Peskov, Kremlin’s spokesperson, Russia’s disapproval of this fine amount was severe and even he sometimes found hard to state it. Such a drastic penalty, designed to make the media pay a collective $58m, serves best to underscore how much Russia cares about the free availability of its state-funded outlets.
