WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) – Workers at a Rhode Island grocery store were shocked to find a bright colored crustacean in their latest seafood delivery.
The extremely rare “golden lobster” was first spotted by the seafood manager at the Dave’s Fresh Marketplace in Warwick.
Susan Budlong, a spokesperson for Dave’s, told Nexstar’s WPRI the seafood manager “knew immediately” that the grocery store shouldn’t sell the lobster.
Budlong said the grocery store reached out to its seafood supplier in Massachusetts, which put them in touch with the Biomes Marine Biology Center in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.
The special lobster has since been donated to the North Kingstown aquarium.
This is not the first time that a rare lobster has been brought to the privately-owned aquarium. The Nordic Lodge, a restaurant in Charlestown, Rhode Island, donated a golden lobster to Biomes back in May after it came in with the restaurant’s seafood shipment.
Biomes is also home to a rare “powder blue lobster.” WPRI reached out to Biomes regarding its newest resident, but has not yet heard back.
The funky-colored crustaceans are the result of a genetic mutation that happens roughly 1 in every 30 million lobsters.
