New instances of the H5 avian flu are suspected in California and Washington where farm workers, dairy cattle and poultry have been infected.
California authorities reported four probable cases involving farm workers as Washington reported three. CDPH has also independently confirmed a total of 20 cases with 17 of those confirmed by the CDC.
At the same time, Washington officials reported three more persons with probable cases of infection stemming from contact with infected poultry to give a total of twelve, of which the CDC has confirmed nine. Such patients had visited Oregon where recent poultry cases have been recorded inclusive of an uncommon type of swine, H5 contemporaneous virus detection in pigs for the first time in the United States of America Oregon Health Authority officials supervised these patients and they have ejected back to Washington for further observation.
New strains also appeared in dairy cattle and the USDA’s APHIS identified 38 more H5N1 cases in California and Utah. In total the virus has incepted 442 herds, spread across fifteen states in the country. Other avian influenza outbreaks were reported in three West states; a commercial turkey farm infected with the virus in California and two backyard farms in Washington and Oregon.
In other news, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported that the H5 avian flu has been identified in one of the country’s wastewater samples for the first time. While there has not been a single human case reported in Los Angeles County, the authorities are observing the situation development and collaborating with the groups at a higher risk of contracting the virus.
