Part of a wing of a Delta Air Lines plane flying from Florida to Texas detached mid-flight on Tuesday.
“After DL 1893 landed safely and without incident in Austin, it was observed that a portion of the left wing’s flap was not in place,” a Delta spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill.
The Delta aircraft, a Boeing 737, departed Orlando around 12:55 p.m. local time and landed safely at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport at about 2:34 p.m. local time, according to FlightAware.
The flight had six crew members on board and 62 passengers, according to Delta.
The plane was taken out of operation for repair as the Federal Aviation Administration investigates the incident.
“During the flight, while the plane was at an altitude of approximately 12,000 feet, we noticed that a part of the wing had broken and was visibly detached,” Shanila Arif, a passenger on the flight, told KXAN, an affiliate of Nexstar, which also owns The Hill.
Arif said the incident was a “serious safety event.”
”We apologize to our customers for their experience as nothing is more important than the safety of our people and customers,” Delta said in its statement.
