NYC skyscraper shooting: What we know about suspect Shane Tamura

New York Police have named Shane Tamura, 27, as the suspected gunman in the Monday shooting at a Midtown Manhattan office building.

Authorities say he fatally shot four and wounded others in the 345 Park Avenue office tower lobby and 33rd floor.

Tamura opened fire on an off-duty police officer, fatally shooting Didarul Islam, another security guard and two additional victims before shooting and killing himself.

Investigators are now working to uncover his motive.

How did he select the location?

New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the authorities are still unsure of how Tamura decided to open fire at New York office tower that houses the NFL, Blackstone and KPMG during a press conference.

However, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) suggested the gunman was targeting the NFL. He said the gunman was attempting to enter the NFL headquarters but took the wrong set of elevators, finding himself inside the Rudin real estate company suite instead.

Tamura was reportedly found with a note alleging the NFL was responsible for his chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disorder often caused by head injuries.

Where is he from?

Tisch said the gunman traveled to New York from Las Vegas to commit the violent crime. He exited a black BMW on 52nd street before entering the building’s lobby.

“The initial investigation shows that Mr. Tamora’s vehicle traveled cross country through Colorado on July 26th, then Nebraska and Iowa on July 27th and then in Columbia, N.J., as recently as 4:24 p.m. today. The vehicle entered New York City shortly thereafter,” Tisch told reporters on Monday.

What did police find inside his car?

Police searched Tamura’s car and found a rifle case with rounds, a loaded revolver, ammunition and magazines, a backpack and medication inside.

“That individual was seen exiting the BMW alone. The building security camera footage shows the shooter enter the lobby, turn right and immediately open fire on an NYPD officer,” Tisch said.

“He then shoots a woman who took cover behind a pillar and proceeds through the lobby spraying it with gunfire. He makes his way to the elevator bank where he shoots a security guard who was taking cover behind the security desk. One additional male is shot in the lobby per his own statement from the hospital,” she added.

Another person was shot once Tamura exited the elevator on the 33rd floor.

Does Tamura have a history with mental health?

Tisch said Tamura had a “documented mental health history.”

“His motives are still under investigation and we are working to understand  why he targeted this particular location,” the New York commissioner told reporters.
